The Premier League has now reached a final decision regarding Fernandes after United appealed his dismissal. The United skipper was sent off for a challenge on James Maddison in the first half of their 3-0 loss.

Due to the straight red card for serious foul play, Fernandes is set to miss the next three matches against Aston Villa, Brentford, and West Ham.

However, the Premier League has decided to overturn the red card after conducting a review.

Manchester United successfully argued against the wrongful dismissal, allowing Fernandes to avoid missing any matches.

Despite receiving the red card, Fernandes offered to handle post-match interview responsibilities for United following their 3-0 defeat, insisting that he should not have been sent off.

He stated to Sky Sports: “Even James Maddison, when he got up, said it’s not a red card. If this is a red card, we need to reevaluate many other incidents.

“I don’t understand why VAR didn’t advise the referee to review the situation on the screen. The red card just exacerbates the situation.”

“I have to commend my teammates for their efforts to get back into the game, but it just wasn’t meant to be. They demonstrated great determination and character.”

On Sunday, the Premier League Match Centre’s Twitter account announced that VAR reviewed the incident and upheld referee Chris Kavanagh’s initial ruling.

The post stated: “The referee showed Fernandes a red card for his challenge on Maddison.

“The VAR reviewed the play and confirmed the referee’s decision of serious foul play.”
