Bruno Fernandes’s red card during the Europa League clash between Porto and Manchester United cannot be appealed for one specific reason. He was dismissed in the 81st minute of the 3-3 draw with Porto after receiving a second yellow card for a high boot.
This incident marks the second time in five days that the United captain has been sent off; he received a straight red for a foul on James Maddison during last Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
While the red card against Tottenham was later overturned, the same won’t happen for Thursday’s incident due to a lesser-known rule. Unlike the situation with the Tottenham card, United cannot contest Fernandes’s dismissal in the Porto match because appeals cannot be made against two yellow cards. As a result, the Red Devils will be without the midfielder for their next Europa League fixture against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce on October 24.
Fenerbahce started their Europa League campaign with a victory over Union Saint-Gilloise and drew 1-1 with FC Twente on Thursday. In contrast, United has yet to secure a win in Europe this season, having drawn with both Porto and FC Twente.
Under Erik ten Hag, United has only managed one win in their last ten European matches, with five losses and four draws, the lone victory being against Danish side Copenhagen last October.
“We will get there,” Ten Hag stated after Thursday’s match. “Don’t judge us now; assess us at the end of the season. We are in a process, and we will improve. We’ve reached finals in the last two seasons, and we will continue to fight.”
Following this result, United sits 21st in the 36-team Europa League standings, two points behind the top eight clubs that will advance to the next round.
In the Premier League, they are currently positioned 13th, outside the top half of the table, with only two wins, one draw, and three losses.
