Several Tottenham Hotspur players could be held accountable for the dismal defeat to Brighton on Sunday evening, but the Sky Sports panel has singled out one player in particular for his role in the crucial goal.
Defensive Weaknesses Haunt Spurs
A trip to the Amex Stadium is always a tough challenge, and with Brighton unbeaten at home this season, Spurs faced a daunting task.
In the first half, however, Tottenham appeared to have the situation under control, dominating possession and creating better scoring opportunities. They capitalized on two chances, with goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison, leading comfortably at halftime.
The tide turned dramatically in the second half, as Brighton quickly punished Spurs with three goals in just 20 minutes, courtesy of Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter, and Danny Welbeck.
The entire Spurs defense, especially Destiny Udogie, struggled and will undoubtedly feel a sense of accountability for the outcome.
Bentancur’s Critical Error
Yet, it is midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur who has faced the most criticism regarding Brighton’s third goal. Former Spurs player Les Ferdinand told the Sky Sports studio that the Uruguayan should have cleared the ball before it was crossed into the box.
While discussing Rutter’s role in the goal, where he maneuvered down the right side of the Tottenham box, getting past Udogie and Bentancur to assist Welbeck, Rutter received commendations for his effort.
However, regarding Bentancur’s actions, Ferdinand remarked, “Bentancur has got to put that out of play. He simply has to clear it. He’s trying to let it go for a goal kick instead.”
Udogie Needs to Improve
While Bentancur should have cleared the ball right away and been more assertive in that moment, I believe Udogie allowed Rutter to get past him too easily. The young Italian appeared careless and complacent throughout the second half.
