Martin Ødegaard and Erling Haaland have found themselves at the center of a controversy surrounding the Norway national team after private messages were exposed in a newly released book. Despite the presence of stars like Arsenal captain Ødegaard and Manchester City striker Haaland, Norway has failed to qualify for a major tournament since 2000. The book, The Battle of the National Team, claims that the team exploited an “ethically questionable loophole” during the Nations League amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a chapter titled “The Doctor’s Lie,” it is alleged that, after Galatasaray defender Omar Elabdellaoui tested positive for Covid-19 in November 2020, the team attempted to bypass Norway’s health regulations. Team doctor Asle B. Kjellsen is accused of allowing 19 players, including Ødegaard, to travel individually from outside Norway, taking advantage of a legal exemption for foreign athletes. Ødegaard reportedly flew from Madrid, while Haaland traveled from Germany.
Private group chat messages between Ødegaard and Haaland, revealed in the book and by Norwegian media outlet NRK, show Haaland sharing a news article about the team’s travel situation. Ødegaard’s response, featuring seven Santa Claus emojis, appeared to mock the predicament. However, despite these efforts, Norway lost 3-0 to Romania and later drew with Austria. Kjellsen, responding to the allegations, told NRK: “Some may view me as a doctor without ethics after reading the book, but I was loyal to my patients, the national team players.”
The leak of private messages has caused tension within the team. Genoa midfielder Morten Thorsby commented, “We don’t want things like this to be leaked. I understand the public interest, but private group messages should stay private.”
Meanwhile, Ødegaard is currently sidelined from the Norway squad due to an ankle injury he sustained during the last international break. In an update provided in Arsenal’s match program before their recent win over Southampton, Ødegaard said his recovery was progressing well. “I’ve been improving a lot recently. Every day I feel better. Hopefully, I’ll be back soon. We’re waiting to see how my ankle responds to training, but so far, it’s better than expected.”
