As several of Liverpool’s current stars, including Robertson, Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah, approach the twilight of their careers, manager Arne Slot is planning for future replacements. According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Liverpool are particularly keen on Carreras and may trigger his €50m release clause in 2025.

The 21-year-old has impressed since his initial loan move to Benfica in January, which was followed by a permanent €6m transfer in the summer. His standout performances have drawn attention from top clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, which could complicate Liverpool’s pursuit given his Spanish heritage.

Liverpool’s interest in Carreras makes sense, as the young left-back fits their needs. He’s highly attack-minded, experienced at a good level, and has familiarity with English football from his time in Manchester United’s youth system. While he never debuted for United’s first team, he was a regular for their U23 side and was named Player of the Season in 2022.

United could regret letting Carreras go, as Benfica might secure a significant €50m from Liverpool or another top European club next summer.
