Two Premier League teams are reportedly interested in acquiring Manchester United’s Antony ahead of the January transfer window. He joined United from Ajax for a reported fee of £86 million in the summer of 2022, making him the second-most costly signing in the club’s history, behind Paul Pogba.
However, the pressure of his hefty price tag seems to have affected the 24-year-old’s performance, as he has struggled to maintain a consistent level of form since his arrival.
With just five goals in 56 Premier League matches, Antony has primarily been utilized as a substitute, featuring in only two league games this season. Erik ten Hag’s recent selections indicate that Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Amad are all ahead of him in the lineup.
As his time at United may be coming to an end, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are reportedly looking to strengthen their attacking options with a potential loan move for the Brazilian, according to Caught Offside. However, Antony is believed to be considering a move away from the Premier League altogether.
He was linked with a transfer to La Liga club Real Betis last August, but the deal did not materialize. There were also rumors of interest from Turkish side Fenerbahçe.
In May 2024, Antony’s agent, Junior Pedroso, stated that his client intended to stay and fight for his place in Ten Hag’s squad. “I see reports about a potential loan exit,” he told journalist Fabrizio Romano. “Antony’s plan is clear: Manchester United. He wants to stay and is focused solely on Man United. We’ve already discussed this with the club.”
Fast forward to last month, and United manager Ten Hag noted that Antony was becoming “impatient” following a 7-0 victory over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup, where the Brazilian scored a penalty but was left out of the following Premier League match against Crystal Palace.
“He wants to play,” said Ten Hag. “But in top football, there are certain rules. You select the team that has the best chance to win, with the best dynamics and chemistry. Players must compete for their positions. The other players are performing well and contributing. He needs to surpass them and earn his spot in training.”
