Liverpool are coming to terms with the likelihood that Trent Alexander-Arnold won’t renew his contract at Anfield, as Real Madrid intensifies their pursuit of the England international. The right-back’s current deal with the Merseyside club runs out at the end of the season, though discussions with the 26-year-old’s representatives remain ongoing, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce.

Speculation around Alexander-Arnold’s future has grown in recent weeks, suggesting that something significant may be unfolding. Earlier this month, Relevo reported that contact had been made between Real Madrid and the Liverpool star’s camp.

Relevo has since updated that Real Madrid continues to work behind the scenes to secure the defender for next summer, knowing a January move would be difficult despite Dani Carvajal’s injury. However, they haven’t entirely ruled out an early transfer.

Multiple reports now suggest Alexander-Arnold is likely to leave his boyhood club in 2025. The Athletic claims that Real Madrid has made him a top target for 2025, and he could be free to negotiate with foreign clubs come January.

While the Spanish club is also considering Pedro Porro, Jeremie Frimpong, and Juanlu, their primary focus is on Alexander-Arnold. Marca has added that Liverpool is beginning to accept the defender’s departure, which would be a significant blow. His unique talents would be impossible to replace, especially if Mohamed Salah or Virgil van Dijk also leave when their contracts expire at the end of the season.
