Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has candidly reflected on his time at Old Trafford, shedding light on why he eventually wanted to depart.
After rising through United’s youth system, Pogba made just three senior appearances before transferring to Juventus in 2012, where his standout performances earned him a return to Manchester for a then-record fee of £89.3m in 2016.
Despite flashes of brilliance, Pogba struggled to live up to the hefty price tag. Although he helped United secure the FA Cup and Europa League, his efforts were not enough to bring the club closer to a Premier League title.
Following his World Cup win in 2018, Pogba rejoined Juventus in 2022, but a meniscus injury limited him to just eight Serie A appearances over two seasons.
More recently, Pogba has been handed an 18-month ban, reduced from four years on appeal, after testing positive for a banned substance. The Court of Arbitration for Sport determined the violation was unintentional.
In a revealing interview with the Daily Mail, Pogba shared for the first time that he had wanted to leave United in 2018, despite having his “best season” at the club.
“The year José [Mourinho] left and Ole [Gunnar Solskjær] came in, that was my best year at United. But after the last game, I told Ole and [CEO] Ed Woodward that I thought it was my last season and I wanted to go,” Pogba revealed.
Solskjær, who initially replaced Mourinho as caretaker manager, was permanently appointed in March 2019 after a strong run of form, during which Pogba contributed 13 goals and nine assists in 35 league matches.
Reflecting on his departure, Pogba admitted, “I was 27 and things hadn’t gone the way I wanted. I gave my all, but I didn’t see the club progressing. I wanted to leave but stayed out of professionalism, even though mentally I wasn’t there.”
Currently contracted with Juventus until 2026, Pogba’s future remains uncertain as he serves his suspension. When asked by Sky Sports about a potential return to the Premier League, Pogba remained non-committal.
“For now, I’m under contract at Juventus. I’ll see their vision and my goal is to prove I’m still a footballer – a new Paul Pogba with the same qualities. I’m still ready,” he said.
