“Ange Postecoglou Reveals Surprising Reason Behind James Maddison’s Half-Time Substitution”
Ange Postecoglou has explained his decision to substitute James Maddison for Pape Matar Sarr at half-time during Tottenham’s 4-1 victory over West Ham.
While Spurs didn’t start the London derby well, conceding in the 18th minute, they ended the first half strongly, leveling the score through Dejan Kulusevski in the 36th minute. After the break, Tottenham dominated, scoring three goals in quick succession within 15 minutes.
Postecoglou credited this second-half resurgence to his tactical switch, opting to replace Maddison with Sarr. The Spurs boss explained that he felt the team needed more energy and running power in midfield to counter West Ham’s pressing.
When asked about the substitution, he told Football.London: “West Ham pose certain challenges in midfield, and I thought Pape’s running power could help us in the second half. They worked hard in the first half, and I felt he could bring energy. He did well, giving us a platform to attack effectively and be clinical.”
Postecoglou also showcased his ability to make timely tactical adjustments, responding to earlier fan concerns about his reluctance to make changes. His decision to introduce Sarr helped nullify West Ham’s midfield threat and regain control of the match.
