Johnson Faces Heavy Criticism
The Tottenham forward received significant backlash after a rocky start to the season, facing intense scrutiny from both mainstream and social media. Many labeled the 23-year-old as an expensive flop, with assumptions that his exit from Instagram was a response to the harsh criticism he received online.

Johnson Clarifies His Decision
However, Johnson clarifies that his decision to leave Instagram was not primarily influenced by online negativity. The Wales international emphasized that the situation was exaggerated and that it was simply a personal choice he made without much contemplation. In an interview with Tottenham’s matchday program (via Football.London), he explained, “It wasn’t a huge concern for me. I think it’s been blown out of proportion. It was just a spontaneous decision—I thought, ‘I’ll just delete it.’ I’ve done something similar before by just removing the app, and this time I decided to deactivate my account, but it wasn’t a big deal.”

Impact on Johnson’s Performance
Since stepping away from Instagram following the North London derby defeat, Johnson’s performance has notably improved. The former Nottingham Forest player has netted six goals in his last seven appearances for Tottenham, but he insists that his decision to leave social media wasn’t aimed at enhancing his game. He added, “It can naturally be a distraction, and we’ve all likely spent too much time scrolling. However, it wasn’t a tactical move, nor was it meant to boost my performance—it was simply a personal choice. My training and hard work never wavered. I always come in to give my best because I love this team.”
