Brennan Johnson has revealed that a specific member of Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff has been instrumental in helping him enhance various aspects of his game.
Johnson Transforms Since Last Season
While Johnson showed flashes of potential last season, his overall performance during his first year at Tottenham was underwhelming. Many Spurs fans felt he hadn’t yet justified the significant transfer fee the club paid for him.
However, the 23-year-old is now finding his stride, emerging as a key goal-scoring threat for Ange Postecoglou’s squad, netting six goals in his last seven appearances.
A Focus on Development
The Welsh international acknowledged his dedication to improving different areas of his game and expressed a desire to diversify his skill set.
Johnson specifically noted that Ryan Mason has been closely guiding him in refining his positioning, shooting technique, and decision-making. In the club’s matchday programme (via Football.London), he shared, “Last season, most of my goals came from being at the back post because we worked on a lot of crosses. I’ve always aimed to be there, knowing there are goals to be scored, like the one against [Manchester] United. I want to showcase a bit of everything, and if I can keep building and adding new elements to my game, I’ll do that.”
He continued, “I’ve been collaborating with the coaches here, especially ‘Mase’. He’s been instrumental in helping me understand positioning, different types of finishes, the part of the foot to strike with, as well as dribbling and shooting. I owe a lot to him for his support.”
Significant Improvement in Composure
While Johnson has always been a strong striker of the ball, his lack of composure in front of goal hindered him last season. He often appeared anxious in the final third, but recently he has demonstrated a newfound calmness when finishing chances.
