Recently, United fans have noticed Zirkzee’s activity on Instagram amid speculation about a potential departure. The 23-year-old Dutch forward made the switch from Italian Serie A club Bologna to United for a reported fee of £36.5 million during the summer transfer window.
Zirkzee initially had a strong start at Old Trafford, scoring in his Premier League debut against Fulham. However, he has since struggled to find the net, going 10 matches without a goal.
Reports surfaced on Tuesday suggesting that Zirkzee might be considering a move in January, just six months after joining United. According to Calciomercato journalist Daniele Longo, the Dutchman is contemplating a return to Serie A if his situation at Old Trafford does not improve.
Fans also noticed that Zirkzee ‘liked’ a video on Instagram that poked fun at his positioning on the field. The video, created by a user pretending to be Zirkzee, illustrated how he tends to drop deep into midfield or drift wide rather than playing as a striker.
When he first arrived at the club, Zirkzee acknowledged his tendency to drop into midfield. He stated, “I occasionally drop down to midfield. I don’t do that for myself but to help the team. I see myself as a false striker—not a No. 9 or a No. 10, but a 9.5! That’s my style. Maybe I’m a bit different from others, but being different is good, right?”
Former England and Arsenal star Paul Merson commented on Zirkzee’s situation, saying, “He did well at Bologna, but the game is different in England, especially at Manchester United. You’re always under scrutiny at this club; if you miss a chance or don’t get one, it becomes a talking point. What’s his best position? Where do they play him? With Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Hojlund also competing for spots, it’s tough to find a place in that front three.”
