A Significant Advantage for Arteta and Arsenal

Arsenal has received a substantial boost regarding injuries ahead of their Premier League match against Liverpool on Sunday. Mikel Arteta and his team have been grappling with an increasing number of injuries in recent weeks, with Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Jurrien Timber all missing from Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.

During that match, left-back Riccardo Calafiori sustained a suspected knee injury, adding to the team’s troubles. Given Calafiori’s history of knee issues, Arsenal fans expressed concern about the injury’s seriousness.

Injury expert Physio Scout suggested on Twitter that the injury is likely related to the medial collateral ligament (MCL) rather than a more severe anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport has now reported that this assessment seems accurate, indicating that Calafiori has been diagnosed with an MCL injury.

He is expected to be sidelined for just a few weeks, suggesting a Grade 1 or low-grade Grade 2 injury. This news would be a significant boost for Arteta, as, although Calafiori will miss the Liverpool match, he could be available for a hectic schedule in December.

After the win over Shakhtar, secured by an own goal from goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk, Arteta commented, “With Riccy, he felt something. I don’t know the extent of that, so in that sense, it’s not great news.”

“He felt something and couldn’t carry on playing. It’s a bit concerning.”

Arsenal will be missing several key players, including Calafiori, for Sunday’s match. William Saliba’s one-match suspension, following his straight red card against Bournemouth for preventing a goal-scoring opportunity by pulling down Evanilson, further adds to the selection challenges. Arsenal opted not to appeal Saliba’s red card.
