United legend Paul Scholes was left astonished by Erik ten Hag’s unusual rationale for placing Noussair Mazraoui in the number 10 role for Manchester United’s Europa League match.

As United prepared to face Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in a crucial must-win clash, Ten Hag announced a surprising change to the starting lineup by benching captain Bruno Fernandes and opting for Mazraoui in the attacking position.

When questioned about this decision, Ten Hag explained to TNT Sports, “We’re bringing Nous Mazraoui into the 10 position. I know from my time at Ajax that I’ve played him there. As a full-back in our system, he operates in the half spaces, so he can handle this role and provide good pressing.”

However, Scholes found this explanation baffling, responding, “I’m confused by it. His reasoning is puzzling… I think Eriksen is perfect for that position. I hope Mazraoui understands what he needs to do better than I do because I struggled to grasp Ten Hag’s explanation. I don’t see him as a number 10.”

Mazraoui, who joined United in the summer as part of a defensive overhaul that included Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, has mainly played as a right-back since his arrival. Thursday night marked his first appearance in midfield for the team.

Scholes also criticized Ten Hag for leaving young striker Rasmus Hojlund on the bench in favor of giving a rare start to new signing Joshua Zirkzee. “I don’t understand why the manager is thinking about Sunday. They need to win games now. They’re 25th in the Europa League and are at risk of being relegated from it. They need to secure victories quickly,” he added.

After a disappointing start to the Premier League season, where United has won only three of their first eight matches, they are set to face West Ham United at London Stadium on Sunday.
