Arsenal news update: The Premier League has clarified why Gabriel Martinelli was not awarded a penalty after his collision with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate.
During the first half of Arsenal’s pivotal Premier League clash with Liverpool, VAR reviewed Konate’s tackle on Martinelli but ultimately decided it did not warrant a penalty.
The incident occurred when Martinelli was caught between two defenders while trying to maintain control of the ball inside the penalty area, with Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold closing in on him.
After getting tangled with the Liverpool players, Martinelli fell to the ground, prompting strong appeals for a penalty. Despite appearances suggesting that Konate had taken him down, VAR officials Michael Salisbury and Darren Cann determined that the challenge did not merit overturning the referee’s original decision.
Following the incident, Kai Havertz shot over the bar after the ball ricocheted off Konate’s challenge. Arsenal players expressed their frustration over the no-call, with Martinelli visibly complaining to referee Anthony Taylor and Leandro Trossard and Havertz making animated gestures for a foul. The Premier League Match Centre, the official account for VAR decisions on X (formerly Twitter), explained the situation online.
The statement confirmed that the referee’s decision not to award a penalty for Konate’s challenge was reviewed and upheld by VAR, which concluded that Konate had played the ball first. Although it seemed that the Frenchman had collided with Martinelli, the officials ruled it legal.
However, Arsenal fans did not have to wait long for a goal, as Mikel Merino headed in a free-kick from Declan Rice just before halftime, putting the Gunners ahead after Virgil van Dijk had equalized following Bukayo Saka’s early opener.
