Erik ten Hag has been dismissed from his role as Manchester United manager after more than two years at the helm, as confirmed by the club.

United currently sit 14th in the Premier League following a 2-1 loss to West Ham on Sunday, marking their worst season start since 1989/90. The pressure on Ten Hag intensified in recent weeks after heavy home defeats to Liverpool and Tottenham.

The club has also struggled in the Europa League, with three consecutive draws.

Manchester United has announced Ten Hag’s departure, and assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy will temporarily lead the first team while the club searches for a permanent replacement.

During his tenure, Ten Hag led United to victories in both domestic cups, including a 2-1 FA Cup win over Manchester City last season, which was pivotal in his continued role despite an underwhelming league performance. However, despite considerable summer investment, the team’s form has not improved.

Sunday’s loss to West Ham, sealed by a contentious late penalty on defender Matthijs de Ligt, was Ten Hag’s final match in charge.

The club is now focused on finding his successor. Although Van Nistelrooy is a potential candidate, he reportedly has reservations due to his close relationship with Ten Hag. Thomas Tuchel declined the role over the summer and is set to manage England starting January, while Mauricio Pochettino, previously linked to United, has accepted the U.S. men’s national team position.

United will face Leicester in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday.
