The captain has spoken up.
Bruno Fernandes is the first Manchester United player to publicly address Erik ten Hag’s dismissal as manager.
Ten Hag’s sacking was confirmed Monday morning, following United’s recent Premier League loss to West Ham, which left the club sitting in 14th place.
The club issued the following statement: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.
“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
After the announcement, Fernandes posted on Instagram, becoming the first United player to share his thoughts on Ten Hag’s departure.
“Thanks for everything, boss! I appreciate the trust and the moments we shared. Wishing you all the best,” he wrote.
“Even though our recent form wasn’t great, I hope fans remember the positive impact Erik had on our club.”
Fernandes led Ten Hag’s side to both domestic trophies during the manager’s tenure, even assisting Kobbie Mainoo in last season’s FA Cup final.
Although he hasn’t scored this season, Fernandes has contributed to 52 goals in 117 Premier League appearances under Ten Hag’s leadership. His season, however, has been disrupted by two red cards against Spurs and Porto, though the straight red at Spurs was later overturned.
United’s rocky start wasn’t limited to the Premier League, as they’ve yet to secure a win in the Europa League, surrendering a lead to Fenerbahce midweek.
