Arne Slot heaps praise on Liverpool star who “took him by surprise” in Arsenal clash

Liverpool manager Arne Slot commended Darwin Nunez’s fitness levels during the 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The Dutch manager was likely the more satisfied of the two coaches after his side secured a point.

Slot’s team managed to equalize twice, thanks to goals from Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, both of whom are in the final year of their contracts with the club and face uncertain futures. Arsenal initially took the lead with a goal from Bukayo Saka, but Liverpool responded with Van Dijk’s set-piece goal.

After Arsenal regained the lead through new signing Mikel Merino, Nunez played a pivotal role in the 81st minute by making a clever run behind the Arsenal defense after receiving a precise pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, setting up Salah for the equalizer.

Slot expressed surprise at Nunez’s performance after the match. Speaking to Liverpool World, he said, “The main reason I kept him on the pitch was his relentless effort. I was impressed with his fitness level, especially considering he hasn’t played much lately. To be able to perform in three consecutive challenging fixtures, including a European away match, and still be fit at the end was remarkable. I was concerned about Curtis [Jones] and whether he could handle playing twice in a row, but with Darwin, I felt I had no choice because he’s our only available striker right now. His hard work was very encouraging.

“While he had to play deeper in the first half, it wasn’t really part of the game plan but rather a reflection of Arsenal’s dominance during that period, even if they didn’t create many clear chances. Their second goal came from set-pieces, and the first goal showcased Saka’s exceptional individual skill.”

With Diogo Jota sidelined due to injury, Nunez was expected to start and he made a positive impact on the team. Although he hasn’t had much playing time this season due to being lower in the pecking order, he has consistently shown improvement and readiness whenever called upon.

Slot has been impressed with Nunez’s contributions, especially after he scored against RB Leipzig in the Champions League last week and provided a key assist against Arsenal, helping Liverpool maintain their strong start to the season. Nunez’s solid performances will create a selection dilemma for Slot when Jota returns to fitness.

Liverpool has also been linked with a move for Jonathan David as a potential replacement for Nunez, with reports suggesting Barcelona may offer him an escape route from Anfield. Next up, Liverpool will face Brighton in the Carabao Cup before hosting them in the Premier League the following week.
