David de Gea ignites internet buzz with mysterious post after Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United exit

David de Gea sparks online frenzy with cryptic post following Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United dismissal
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea made waves on social media with a cryptic post following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal from Old Trafford.
Ten Hag, 54, was relieved of his duties Monday morning, as confirmed by the club’s official statement. The news spurred responses from several former United players, including Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, with Ferdinand expressing gratitude for Ten Hag’s contributions.
However, De Gea took a different approach. Now playing for Serie A’s Fiorentina, the Spanish international simply posted a ‘chef’s kiss’ emoji on X.
According to the Mirror, De Gea and Ten Hag reportedly had a strained relationship during contract negotiations in the 2022-23 season, Ten Hag’s first year in charge. It’s believed De Gea felt both Ten Hag and former football director Tom Murtough were to blame for his departure.
The 33-year-old, who left United at the end of the 2022-23 season, joined Fiorentina in August 2024 after a brief stint as a free agent. He seems content with his new club, making six appearances so far in Serie A.
It’s thought Ten Hag was not keen on De Gea due to the keeper’s limited ability with his feet, opting instead for Andre Onana, who was signed for £47.2m in 2023 for his superior ball-handling skills. Despite this, De Gea remains a fan favorite, having been the club’s keeper during their 2013 Premier League title season.
De Gea’s subtle post on social media generated mixed reactions from fans. One user defended Ten Hag, writing, “You play for Fiorentina—no one cares what you think.” Another commented, “Let’s be honest, you struggled in your last months at United.” A third added, “Childish,” while another simply said, “Tears, he saw the Ten Hag news.”
