Karim Benzema is the latest to weigh in on the Ballon d’Or debate.
Fans have criticized Benzema’s remarks after he shared his reaction to Rodri winning the award over his former Real Madrid teammate, Vinicius Jr.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or sparked controversy in the football world when Vinicius Jr, along with the entire Real Madrid delegation, decided not to attend the ceremony. Fabrizio Romano reported that Vinicius skipped the event as a form of silent protest upon learning he would not receive the award.
After Rodri’s win, Vinicius posted on X, “I’ll do it 10x if I have to. They’re not ready,” which was followed by many players, including Toni Kroos, Richarlison, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Franck Ribery, publicly supporting him.
Benzema, now playing for Al-Ittihad, also commented, revealing he had spoken with Vinicius following the ceremony. “I spoke to Vini, he’s sad… it’s also normal. He deserved to win the Ballon d’Or,” Benzema told El Chiringuito TV.
However, fans took issue with his next remark, where he appeared to downplay Rodri’s impact, saying, “I’ve nothing against Rodri, good player… but I’m on my sofa watching TV, and Rodri doesn’t do anything that makes you say: wow.”
Many online found these comments disrespectful, especially given other professionals had made similar remarks about Rodri. One fan commented, “I never said wow when watching Benzema score tap-ins.” Another added, “Maybe he expected Rodri to play like Messi and Ronaldo when he’s actually a DM.”
