The interim United boss had a night to remember. Ruud van Nistelrooy, in his very first game as United’s manager, accomplished something that eluded Erik ten Hag throughout his tenure.

At 48, Van Nistelrooy took on the interim role just days after Ten Hag’s exit on Monday. In only three days, he managed a feat his predecessor couldn’t achieve.

During United’s Carabao Cup match against Leicester City, the team delivered a powerful performance, scoring five goals. Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes each netted twice, with Alejandro Garnacho adding his own on the 28-minute mark. Fernandes’s second goal brought United to five, marking the first time in recent memory that the club has scored five goals against Premier League opposition—something Ten Hag never managed.

This 5-2 victory secured United a spot in the quarter-final draw. Although the team’s offensive display was thrilling, Van Nistelrooy is expected to serve only in a temporary capacity, as the club reportedly nears an agreement with Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim.

United fans are hopeful that this goal-scoring momentum will carry over into their Premier League campaign, where finding the back of the net has been a challenge. So far, they’ve scored only eight goals in nine league games.

Despite United’s early-season struggles, Van Nistelrooy expressed confidence in the squad. In his program notes, he wrote, “Even on an interim basis, it’s an honor to manage the club I love for as long as I’m needed. I returned this summer as Erik’s assistant because I believe Manchester United can reach the heights I once knew as a player.”

He continued, “I still believe that, but it will require time and hard work. We’ve seen glimpses of the squad’s potential this season, though not often enough.”
