Arsenal suffered a defeat at St James’s Park against Newcastle in Saturday’s early kick-off. The Gunners struggled to create any significant opportunities until the 90th minute when Declan Rice headed wide from close range. Mikel Arteta expressed visible frustration during his post-match press conference following the loss.

The absence of captain and key playmaker Martin Ødegaard was evident, as Arsenal players frequently looked to Bukayo Saka for inspiration, but even he couldn’t help turn the tide.

Taking responsibility for his team’s lack of creativity against Newcastle, Arteta stated, “When you create three clear chances in a game, you expect to score because these are the fine margins we always talk about. However, the team should have produced more, and that’s on me.”

He continued, “We started the match strongly, looking sharp and lively. But after one direct play action, they capitalized on a second ball, which they excel at. They delivered an incredible cross and finish. After that, the momentum shifted; they knew their game plan clearly, and in situations like this, you have two options.

“We simply weren’t good enough and lacked the answers to overcome that, particularly in generating the threat we needed. In the end, we relied on two or three significant chances: one from Mikel, two from Declan, and one from Gabi.

“There wasn’t enough threat to change the game or secure a win, which is the frustrating part. But credit to them for their performance.”

Arteta acknowledged that his team did not earn the three points against Newcastle this afternoon. With upcoming matches against Inter Milan and Chelsea, the Gunners need to make quick improvements if they hope to get their season back on track.
