Ruben Amorim is set to officially join Manchester United on November 11, and fans are already sharing strong opinions on his potential lineup choices, especially after Sunday’s Premier League match against Chelsea.
The 39-year-old head coach, who has signed a contract through June 2027 with an optional extension, will make his United debut against Ipswich Town on November 24. Arriving in advance, Amorim will have nearly two weeks to work with the squad on the Carrington training pitch before traveling to Portman Road.
Given his coaching background, many expect the Portuguese manager to bring more opportunities to former Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte, whom he developed into a top defensive midfielder before Ugarte’s move to PSG in 2023. Despite Ugarte’s early struggles in England, his familiarity with Amorim’s 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 system may prove valuable.
However, fans expressed mixed reactions online after seeing Ugarte partner with Casemiro in Sunday’s game, with several questioning the midfield’s effectiveness. One fan remarked, “An Ugarte-Casemiro double pivot gotta be one of the worst combos you can have in possession,” while others labeled the duo “horrendous” and “criminal” in terms of ball retention.
Still, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy remains confident in Ugarte’s potential. “I’m convinced about Manuel. He’ll be a great player for United,” he stated, praising Ugarte’s defensive instincts and determination to adapt. Van Nistelrooy also noted that with midfielders Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount currently sidelined, Ugarte will be relied upon heavily in the coming weeks.
