Troy Deeney may have sparked the ire of Liverpool fans after making the bold claim that Mohamed Salah is “not world-class.”
Salah has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success under Jürgen Klopp, playing a pivotal role in the Reds’ triumphs in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup, among other accolades.
Under new manager Arne Slot, the Egyptian superstar has maintained his high standards, amassing 10 goals and 10 assists in 17 appearances this season. Since joining Liverpool in 2017, Salah has racked up an impressive 221 goals and 99 assists in 366 games—stats that many believe cement his status as world-class.
However, Deeney holds a different view. Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Watford striker argued that while Salah is exceptional and vital to Liverpool, he doesn’t meet his personal definition of “world-class.”
“For me, world-class means a player I’d want my kids to emulate,” Deeney explained. “If I had to choose, I’d tell my kids to study Vinícius Jr. over Salah. That’s just my opinion.”
Acknowledging Salah’s prolific goal-scoring record, Deeney added, “He’s highly effective, no doubt, but I just don’t see him as world-class. He’s probably thinking, ‘Who the f*** is Troy?,’ and fair enough—but that’s how I see it.”
Deeney’s remarks have ignited debate, with many fans and pundits questioning how a player with Salah’s extraordinary achievements could be excluded from the “world-class” category.
