“Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk Withdrawn from Netherlands Squad Ahead of Bosnia Showdown”
Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has been released from the national team squad ahead of their UEFA Nations League match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Liverpool star featured in a full 90-minute performance during the Netherlands’ 4-0 victory over Hungary on Saturday, where goals from Wout Weghorst, Cody Gakpo, Denzel Dumfries, and Teun Koopmeiners secured the win. However, Van Dijk will not participate in Tuesday’s final group stage fixture at the Bilino Polje Stadium.
With the Netherlands already assured of a spot in the Nations League quarter-finals, manager Ronald Koeman confirmed that both Van Dijk and Frenkie de Jong have been sent back to their clubs for “medical reasons.”
Speaking via the Netherlands’ official channels, Koeman explained, “For both Frenkie and Virgil, it is better for them to leave the training camp at this moment. This decision was made on medical grounds, prioritizing the players’ well-being.”
Van Dijk’s early departure provides him with additional recovery time ahead of Liverpool’s packed schedule. The Premier League leaders face a crucial run of games, including matches against Southampton, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Everton.
The 33-year-old, who has played every minute of Liverpool’s league campaign so far, will return to the AXA Training Centre for further assessments. Liverpool noted on their official website that the decision is expected to benefit Van Dijk’s fitness during this demanding period.
Reflecting on the Netherlands’ recent progress following their semi-final exit at Euro 2024, Van Dijk said, “I aim to give my best on and off the pitch, contributing 100% every day. We’re improving steadily, especially in possession, though there are moments defensively where we can tighten up and play more compactly.”
