However, new head coach Ruben Amorim might be ready to hand one youngster his long-awaited debut this Sunday.
Amorim, 39, is set to take charge of his first match as United’s manager when they face Ipswich Town at Portman Road on November 24. Since officially stepping into the role on November 11, fans have been closely analyzing training footage, hoping to uncover clues about his potential lineup. One player who has reportedly caught Amorim’s attention is a young winger.
Known for his tactical success at Sporting Lisbon, Amorim frequently utilized a 3-4-3 formation, which emphasizes defensive responsibility, particularly for full-backs tasked with contributing in both attack and defense. This system contrasts with the more traditional setups employed by many current Premier League managers.
Under former manager Erik ten Hag, United typically relied on a central defensive partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt, with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans as backups. This weekend, though, a forgotten name could make his return to the squad.
According to reports from The Daily Mail, Leny Yoro has been heavily involved in Amorim’s training sessions. The 19-year-old was even withdrawn from the Under-21 squad’s match against Altrincham on Tuesday, as reported by The Sun.
Signed for £52 million from Lille in the summer of 2024 after an impressive Ligue 1 campaign, Yoro sparked excitement among United fans. Unfortunately, a fractured metatarsal sustained during a pre-season clash against Arsenal delayed his competitive debut. After recovering, Yoro returned to full first-team training earlier this month.
While it remains uncertain if he is fully match-fit, the young defender could feature in Sunday’s game.
Yoro has previously spoken about how former United and England star Rio Ferdinand influenced his decision to join the club.
“He [Rio Ferdinand] called me,” Yoro revealed to the club’s official website.
“I was really impressed to speak with him. We talked for about ten minutes about United, and he helped me a lot in making my decision. It was an honor.
“He told me about the history of the club, its big legacy, and how I would need to fight for my place. He said this is the biggest club in the world, and that conversation meant a lot to me.”
