“Pep Guardiola Breaks Silence on Facial Cuts After Alarming Post-Match Man City Interview”
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola took to X to clarify comments made after his team’s dramatic 3-3 draw against Feyenoord on Tuesday.
Visibly frustrated, Guardiola watched as his side blew a three-goal lead in just 15 minutes, extending their winless streak to six matches, including five defeats. The result left City languishing in 15th place in the 36-team Champions League group stage, having already dropped points to Inter Milan and Sporting earlier in the campaign.
Post-match, the 53-year-old appeared with scratches on his head and nose, which he explained during the press conference. “I cut it with my finger, my nail,” Guardiola said, adding with a laugh that he wanted to “hurt himself.”
Following this comment, Guardiola addressed the situation in a statement on X, clarifying his remarks.
“A question caught me off guard at the end of last night’s press conference about a scratch on my face,” he wrote. “I explained it was caused accidentally by a sharp fingernail. My response was in no way meant to make light of the serious issue of self-harm. I recognize that many people face mental health challenges daily, and I want to take this opportunity to highlight resources like the Samaritans hotline at 116 123
Despite his frustration with City’s performance, Guardiola stressed his players’ commitment to turning things around.
“They’re desperate to win; that’s why they play the way they do,” he said. “We created so many chances—26 shots against Spurs, yet we lost 4-0. We’ve been a stable defensive team for years, but now, every time opponents attack, they score.”
With a crucial trip to league leaders Liverpool at Anfield looming on Sunday, Guardiola will be looking to narrow the eight-point gap to Arne Slot’s side as City aim to rediscover their form.
