Liverpool are reportedly making preparations for a potential future without Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract is set to expire next summer. While their priority remains convincing the 25-year-old to commit to a new deal, reports suggest the Reds are exploring contingency options should the England star depart.
David Ornstein has revealed that Liverpool have tabled a new contract offer for Alexander-Arnold, but interest from Real Madrid looms large. The Spanish giants, in search of a long-term replacement for Dani Carvajal—sidelined with an ACL injury—are said to view Alexander-Arnold as an ideal candidate.
In response, Liverpool have reportedly identified Chelsea’s Malo Gusto as a potential successor. Scouts have been sent to monitor the 21-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Lyon last summer for £30.7 million. Gusto has impressed as the Blues’ first-choice right-back during Reece James’ injury absence, even showcasing his versatility by filling in at left-back.
Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown noted to Football Insider that Liverpool could see an opportunity to lure Gusto with the promise of regular first-team football, something Chelsea may struggle to offer once James returns. Gusto, a France international with six assists to his name last season, is seen as a promising long-term investment.
However, prising him away from Chelsea won’t come cheap. The 21-year-old signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, meaning Liverpool would likely need to offer a significantly higher fee than the £30.7 million Chelsea paid to secure his services.
