Tottenham’s 6-3 loss to Liverpool has sparked calls from some fans for the removal of manager Ange Postecoglou, who has already overseen eight defeats in the Premier League this season.
Postecoglou has struggled to replicate the success of his first season in charge, which saw Tottenham finish fifth. Heading into Christmas, they now sit 11th in the league.
The heavy loss to Liverpool on Sunday marked their eighth defeat of the season and was the first time in 10 years they had conceded five goals in a home league match. These ongoing struggles have increased pressure on the Australian manager.
Despite grappling with an ongoing injury crisis, which saw 18-year-old Archie Gray fill in at centre-back against Liverpool, some Spurs supporters have lost patience.
One fan called Postecoglou “the worst manager this club has ever employed,” while another declared, “He needs to go. Today was unacceptable.” A third added, “It’s painful to watch Ange ball. So painful that I will take a break from this. Haven’t seen a worse manager in decades.”
A fourth fan criticized Postecoglou’s tactics, saying, “No threat, no tactical adjustments, no patterns of play but plenty of head shakes from Mr. Postecoglou. Out of his depth against an elite manager, who’s been at Liverpool for just a few months.”
A fifth concluded, “Was prepared for defeat today, but not utter farce. Enough of the nonsense, Postecoglou must go. If anyone thinks anything’s being ‘built’ here, or that this is the painful stage of some ‘project,’ they’re totally delusional.”
Following the defeat, Postecoglou gave a blunt response when questioned about his team’s defensive weaknesses. He told BBC Sport, “I’m just going to stop answering these questions. If people can’t see the obvious, I’m not going to point it out. Make of it what you want. Yes, we are conceding goals.”
He continued, “If you want to discount the fact we are missing a goalkeeper, two centre-backs, and a left-back, and say that hasn’t coincided with what we are doing – I don’t know what to say anymore. People make up their minds in their own way. They either think what I’m doing is good or bad, and that’s fine.”
Postecoglou added, “If you took out Liverpool’s goalkeeper, two centre-backs, and a left-back – or any team other than Liverpool – they would find it tough going as well.”
He concluded, “It’s obviously a painful one for us. Credit to Liverpool, they were too good for us. They’re in great form, feeling confident. It was a bridge too far for us. We looked like we lacked energy, which is understandable.”
