Paul Merson gave Liverpool fans a good laugh with his commentary on Mo Salah sealing yet another Reds victory this afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had to battle hard at Anfield after Southampton took a surprise lead just before halftime. However, Liverpool responded in style, securing a 3-1 win with Salah converting two penalties.

The victory wasn’t fully confirmed until the Egyptian King smashed home his second spot-kick in the 88th minute, further cementing his status as the Premier League’s top scorer. Interestingly, Salah and his teammates were momentarily unaware they could make a sixth substitution due to an earlier head injury to Jan Bednarek.

Merson Cracks ‘800-Goal’ Joke About Salah

Salah’s second goal of the afternoon marked his 27th in the league this season and his 32nd across all competitions. However, Merson took things to another level on Soccer Saturday, hilariously exaggerating the tally.

As Liverpool’s No.11 rifled his penalty past Aaron Ramsdale, the pundit quipped with a touch of hyperbole: “Nobody was saving that. It’s his 800th goal of the season!”

Salah’s Goal Record Defies Belief

While Salah’s actual total is far from Merson’s playful estimate, his numbers remain staggering. Reaching 32 goals before mid-March is a remarkable feat, putting him within touching distance of his debut-season tally from 2017/18.

His latest strike also saw him draw level with Sergio Aguero (184 goals) in the Premier League’s all-time top-scorer list, with only Andy Cole (187) standing in his way of fourth place.

Should Salah extend his contract and stay at Anfield beyond this season, reaching the 200-goal milestone in the Premier League seems inevitable. It may not be the 800 that Merson joked about, but it’s still a testament to his legendary status in English football.
