Thierry Henry stresses that Arsenal’s only path to victory against Real Madrid in the Champions League is through unwavering belief in themselves.

Henry warns that simply participating in the quarter-final without confidence in an upset is pointless. Real Madrid, the reigning European champions, showcased their resilience by eliminating Atletico Madrid in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-0 regulation-time defeat.

Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, aided by VAR decisions, now prepares to face Arsenal in their first competitive meeting since 2006.

Henry, who played a key role in Arsenal’s historic victory at the Bernabeu nearly two decades ago with a stunning solo goal, recalls how a goalless draw at Highbury set up their quarter-final clash with Juventus. Once again, Arsenal enters the matchup as underdogs. However, Henry insists that even a flawless performance over two legs won’t be enough unless Mikel Arteta instills a strong sense of belief in his players to take on Ancelotti’s elite Champions League-winning team.

When asked about the key to causing an upset, Henry simply stated: “Believe that you can.”

Reflecting on his own experience, he added:
“I’ve been in that situation with a team that had slightly less talent. When we were drawn against Real Madrid, people laughed, especially in Spain. If you step onto the pitch already thinking you can’t win, believing they are the superior team with 15 titles compared to none, then you may as well not play at all.

“If your mindset is just to see what happens, there’s no point in showing up. You must enter with the belief that you can win—that’s what ambition is about.”

Henry pointed to past examples like Greece winning the Euros and Leicester City claiming the Premier League title, emphasizing that self-belief is the foundation of success.

“Whether you can actually do it is another challenge. Look at Atletico Madrid—they have beaten Real Madrid multiple times, yet sometimes it wasn’t enough. Manchester City have played brilliantly against them, yet still fell short.”

“If you don’t believe you can win, then don’t bother playing. To beat Real Madrid, you need a near-perfect performance from start to finish. Even then, there’s no guarantee.”

Now, it’s up to Arsenal to prove they can rise to the occasion, both at home and away—a daunting task.

While Real Madrid had to battle hard to overcome Atletico, Arsenal cruised through their last tie, progressing with a 9-3 aggregate win after a 2-2 draw with PSV.

Arteta, outlining his approach to the upcoming challenge, emphasized:
“The key is to be at your absolute best for both matches, every single minute. You can’t afford to give anything away because Madrid will punish you. We learned that lesson today with the two goals we conceded.”

“Ultimately, games are decided in the penalty areas. Individual quality and key contributions will be crucial. Also, we need to create an electric atmosphere when we play at home.”

Arsenal returned to the quarter-finals last season for the first time in 15 years but fell just short against Bayern Munich. Reflecting on that experience, Arteta said:
“Last year, we put Bayern under pressure at home despite their strong history and consistency over the past 20-25 years. They recovered, and in that moment, we lacked what was needed to take the final step.”

“I hope we’ve learned from that experience and can now show that we are stronger, giving us a real chance to achieve our goals.”
