Mayor Steve Rotheram releases statement following car incident at Liverpool parade on Monday.
Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram has spoken out following Monday night’s tragic event that left nearly 50 people injured, including 27 who were taken to hospital, with two suffering serious injuries.
The incident took place just after 6 p.m., shortly after Liverpool FC’s Premier League title celebration parade had ended. A car drove into a crowd, and a 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area was arrested in connection with the incident.
On Tuesday morning, Mayor Rotheram visited the scene and issued a statement emphasizing that Merseyside Police are continuing their investigation, and that the wellbeing of those injured remains the top priority.
A police cordon remains in place, along with an investigation tent, as officers work to gather all necessary evidence before reopening Water Street and the surrounding area.
“Yesterday’s scene was the complete opposite of today,” Rotheram said. “Where now the streets are quiet, yesterday they were filled—possibly with a million people—coming together to show their love for the team, to celebrate a historic victory, and to cheer on their heroes.”
“We need to allow the police to do their job. Once their investigation is complete, things may return to normal—but not for those who witnessed what happened or for the four individuals still critically injured in hospital. They are our main focus right now.”
Mayor Rotheram also thanked emergency service personnel and members of the public who stepped in to help as the situation unfolded.
