Ange Postecoglou, who ended Tottenham’s 17-year wait for silverware, has been tipped for a swift return to Premier League management following his shock sacking.
The Australian coach guided Spurs to a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao, securing Champions League qualification in the process. Despite delivering the club’s first trophy since 2008 and fulfilling his own prediction of success in his second season, Postecoglou will not continue into a third campaign.
Spurs officially parted ways with the 59-year-old on Friday after a week of internal discussions, citing a disappointing 17th-place Premier League finish as the key factor. The club released a statement saying the decision came “after a review of performances and significant reflection.”
Postecoglou is reportedly due a £6 million payout — £4 million in compensation and an extra £2 million as a bonus for winning the Europa League.
Premier League return on the cards?
Despite his abrupt departure, there’s growing belief that Postecoglou won’t be out of work for long. Former Premier League champion Lee Sharpe believes the ex-Spurs boss is “perfectly suited” to the English top flight.
“I can definitely see Ange managing another Premier League team,” Sharpe told Coin Poker. “His upbeat personality and high-tempo football fit the league perfectly. He’s honest and clear with his approach and knows exactly what he wants from his players.”
Sharpe praised Postecoglou’s attacking style and insisted that, when fully fit, Spurs were a dangerous side. While the team struggled defensively — in part due to injuries to key centre-backs — Sharpe defended the manager’s all-out playing style, calling it exciting and full of energy.
Postecoglou breaks silence after exit
Following his dismissal, Postecoglou released a heartfelt message via his agency CAA on Instagram, expressing gratitude to the club, players, and fans.
“Leading one of England’s most historic clubs and helping restore its glory is something I’ll carry with me forever,” he wrote.
He reflected on the challenges and doubters he faced, and described the Europa League triumph in Bilbao as the result of two years of dedication and belief. He expressed confidence in the current squad, saying they had the potential for more success and praised the supporters for their backing, even in tough times.
Postecoglou concluded by thanking his coaching staff and players, calling them a “fantastic group of young men” and “legends of this football club.”

With Postecoglou out, Spurs are eyeing Brentford manager Thomas Frank as a leading candidate. The Danish coach has earned praise for his work at Brentford, and Spurs are reportedly keen to bring him in to lead the club into a new era.
