Liverpool appear to be closing in on the signing of Florian Wirtz as the provisional transfer window deadline approaches.

The Reds have been in ongoing discussions with Bayer Leverkusen to finalise the specifics of a deal expected to surpass the £100 million mark. Wirtz, who has turned down interest from Bayern Munich, is said to be fully committed to joining Liverpool.

While negotiations have dragged on, it’s understandable that Leverkusen are holding firm in an effort to secure the highest possible fee. With only two years remaining on Wirtz’s current contract, this summer may be their best opportunity to cash in significantly on the talented midfielder.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that a full agreement is nearly in place, with a medical potentially scheduled for next week. This comes after Leverkusen reportedly rejected Liverpool’s third bid of £113 million, as they continue to push for £118 million. This has been echoed by the Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele.

With just £5 million separating the two clubs, Liverpool are unlikely to walk away, especially given how highly Wirtz is valued within Arne Slot’s vision for the upcoming 2025/26 season.

Assuming all goes smoothly, Leverkusen will get their record sale, and Liverpool will secure a rising star who could lead their attack for years to come — possibly stepping into the spotlight once occupied by Mohamed Salah.
