Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t hold back his emotions after helping Portugal claim another historic international title, as they became the first team to win the UEFA Nations League twice.
The 40-year-old forward, earning his 221st cap for his country on Sunday night, found the net for the 138th time in international football before Portugal edged past rivals Spain in a tense penalty shootout.
Ronaldo had already delivered a crucial goal in the semi-final victory over Germany, and once again made a vital impact by scoring the equaliser to bring the score to 2-2 in a game where Roberto Martinez’s side twice came from behind.
He was eventually subbed off with two minutes left in regular time after suffering a muscle injury.
In a post-match interview, Ronaldo revealed the extent of his commitment to the national team: “I’d been feeling it for a while, but for Portugal, I’d go as far as breaking a leg if needed. It was for a trophy—I had to play and gave everything I had.”
The Al Nassr star was visibly emotional after the final whistle, later explaining that his tears were a reflection of the pride he feels representing his nation.
“What an incredible feeling,” he told Sport TV. “First of all, I’m thrilled for this generation—they deserved a title like this. My family was here: my kids, my wife, my brother, close friends. Winning for Portugal is always different. I’ve won many trophies at club level, but nothing compares to winning for your country. Those were tears of joy and pride—mission accomplished.”
He added: “Whenever I talk about Portugal, it brings out something special in me. Being captain of this group fills me with pride. Winning a title with the national team is the highest honor.”
Ronaldo also noted that the victory over Spain boosts Portugal’s belief heading into future tournaments: “This win gives us confidence going into the World Cup—we now know we can beat any team in the world.”
Uncertainty at club level
While Ronaldo continues to shine internationally, questions remain over his club future. After playing his final match of the season for Al Nassr, the veteran forward posted a cryptic message on social media: “This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all.”
His current contract with the Saudi club is set to expire at the end of June. Although reports suggest Al Nassr are keen to offer him a two-year extension, nothing has been finalized.
Additionally, with the club failing to qualify for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the U.S., Ronaldo’s next move remains uncertain.
