Mason Greenwood’s reunion with Manchester United has been confirmed, while the star manager at Old Trafford feels ‘humiliated.’

Mason Greenwood will join forces with former Manchester United academy teammate Angel Gomes at Marseille next season. This reunion happens five years after Gomes left United, a departure marked by a difficult experience with former manager José Mourinho.

Marseille confirmed this week that they have reached a preliminary agreement to sign England international Gomes. The Ligue 1 runners-up, led by Roberto De Zerbi, outmaneuvered several clubs to secure his signing, with Gomes reportedly agreeing to a three-year contract at the Orange Velodrome.

RMC Sport previously reported that Gomes was attracted by De Zerbi’s playing style and the opportunity to compete in the Champions League. He chose to leave Lille as his contract was set to expire this summer.

Gomes had moved to Lille in the summer of 2020 after his contract with United ended, having been viewed as a promising talent since joining the club in 2006. He debuted at just 16 years old, becoming United’s youngest Premier League player under Mourinho on the last day of the 2016/17 season.

However, Gomes experienced a tough moment when Mourinho publicly criticized his performance in a reserve match, leaving him nearly in tears. He recalled, “I played a game for the reserves, and he didn’t think I played well enough… A few days later, he brought it up in front of everyone.”

Reflecting on that incident, Gomes said, “At the time, I wondered why he did that publicly. Some players told me he just wanted a reaction. I was young and emotional.”

As he grew older, Gomes came to appreciate Mourinho’s approach, realizing it aimed to drive players to improve. He noted, “What I learned about Jose is that he always wants you to do better… I probably needed that.”

Despite the initial impact, Gomes wishes he had been more open to Mourinho’s methods, stating, “If only I had understood him better, I would have valued my time with him more.”

Gomes left United during Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s management after Mourinho’s sacking in 2018. His playing time was limited under Solskjær, while Greenwood was making his mark in the first team during the 2019/20 season.

After accumulating just 320 minutes with United, Gomes departed as a free agent, marking a challenging chapter in his career. His transfer to Lille, which included a loan to Boavista, revitalized his career, leading to 134 appearances for Lille, where he played a key role in their fifth-place finish this season.

Gomes also made an impression with the England U21 team last year, earning his first four caps, though he has yet to appear under new manager Thomas Tuchel.
