Liverpool have reached an agreement for a £35 million transfer, which includes a buy-back clause.

Liverpool have agreed to transfer Jarrell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, making it the third deal between the two clubs this summer, following the acquisitions of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz. Quansah, who is currently participating in the U21 European Championships with England, will join Leverkusen once the tournament concludes, where his team will face Holland in the quarter-finals.

Under the leadership of new manager Erik ten Hag, Leverkusen is looking to fill the gap left by Jonathan Tah’s departure to Bayern Munich on a free transfer. The clubs have settled on a £35 million deal, with Liverpool receiving £30 million upfront and an additional £5 million in performance-related add-ons. Quansah has signed a contract until 2030.

Notably, Liverpool has included a buy-back clause, suggesting they see potential for Quansah to return in the future. They believe he needs consistent playing time to develop, as he made only five starts in the Premier League last season, despite featuring 24 times overall.

With Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk as the primary centre-backs, and the club searching for more defensive options, it was determined that further limited opportunities would not benefit Quansah’s growth. Even though he signed a long-term contract until 2029 last October, he will now move to Germany.

Liverpool is also eyeing Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi as a potential addition to their defense, with the £30 million from Quansah’s transfer helping to finance that move. This transaction also sets a new record fee for Leverkusen, exceeding the £27 million they paid for Kerem Demirbay in 2019.
