Ibrahima Konate’s Liverpool Future in Doubt Amid Contract Stalemate
There is growing uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konate’s future at Liverpool.
The French defender has yet to agree to a contract extension, with his current deal running until the summer of 2026. This has sparked concerns at Anfield about a potential repeat of the Trent Alexander-Arnold saga, where Real Madrid swooped in to sign the England international on a free transfer.
With Madrid now reportedly eyeing Konate, Liverpool fans may need to brace themselves for a similar scenario two years down the line.
Konate Reportedly Unhappy With New Contract Offer
According to Mark Brus of CaughtOffside, Konate is dissatisfied with the structure of the proposed new deal. The main sticking point appears to be Liverpool’s preference for performance-based incentives over a guaranteed weekly salary of £200,000.
Meanwhile, both Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are said to be monitoring the situation closely as talks continue.
Despite the contract impasse, Liverpool have no intention of letting Konate leave this summer, even with the risk of losing him for nothing later.
Defensive Reinforcements a Key Priority
The uncertainty around Konate’s future only underscores the urgent need for Liverpool to reinforce their defence.
The recent £30 million sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen has left the club thin at centre-back. Beyond Virgil van Dijk and Konate, Joe Gomez remains the only other senior option. While players like Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch could be deployed in emergency situations, it’s far from ideal.
Given these limitations, failing to bring in another central defender would be a major oversight.
Liverpool Eyeing Marc Guehi as Potential Addition
With that in mind, Liverpool are reportedly tracking Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi. Like Konate, his contract also runs until 2026, and there’s a belief that the Reds might look to pounce if the opportunity arises.
While Liverpool could choose to gamble on eventually resolving Konate’s contract situation — as they did successfully with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah — the club may prefer a more proactive approach.
Don’t be surprised if the recruitment team steps up efforts to sign someone like Guehi before the start of pre-season, especially if the price is deemed reasonable.
