Following their Champions League qualification, manager Eddie Howe views Isak as essential to his plans for establishing Newcastle as a major force in English football.
Howe has openly discussed securing Isak with a lucrative new contract, as his current deal, worth £120,000 a week, runs until June 2028. However, fresh negotiations have yet to begin, creating opportunities for rival clubs like Arsenal to consider a move.
According to Liverpool Echo correspondent Paul Gorst, the Premier League champions are monitoring the situation over the summer, particularly after the Profit and Sustainability Regulations reset on June 30. This date marks the end of the financial year for many clubs, making it vital to comply with regulations to avoid potential penalties.
Isak had an impressive season, scoring 27 goals in 42 matches, including 23 in the Premier League. He was instrumental in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool, ending a 70-year trophy drought, and helped secure a Champions League spot with a fifth-place finish.
Newcastle set a £150 million price tag on Isak, who was signed for a record £63 million in August 2022, and they are not looking to part ways with him easily. Meanwhile, Liverpool is considering breaking a British transfer record to sign the Swedish international, especially as Darwin Nunez approaches a move to Napoli.
If Liverpool fails to acquire Isak, they may target alternatives like Hugo Ekitike or Joao Pedro, and they are also interested in Viktor Gyokeres, who is on the radar of Arsenal and Manchester United.
Liverpool has already spent over £200 million in the transfer market since the season ended, with Milos Kerkez being their latest signing, joining Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong. Their total summer spending has reached £216 million, and with much of their transfer activity completed ahead of pre-season training, sporting director Richard Hughes and manager Arne Slot remain calm about the situation regarding Isak.
