Liverpool could face the potential loss of two key players as a surplus of left-backs is creating a significant problem, according to Ornstein.
Liverpool may have to make an undesirable sacrifice this summer due to a constrained squad quota and growing uncertainty at left-back.
David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that the limit of 17 non-homegrown players is complicating squad decisions, with Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas among those most likely to depart.
The signing of Milos Kerkez for £40 million has intensified competition for Robertson and Tsimikas. The report states, “The lack of homegrown players results in a cap of 17 non-homegrown players in the squad. This means at least one current player will miss out, with Federico Chiesa, Darwin Nunez, and either Robertson or Tsimikas being the most probable exits.”
Arne Slot’s preference for a compact squad further complicates matters. Ornstein adds that Slot is willing to promote under-21 players to maintain numbers.
Robertson’s potential move to Atletico Madrid was discussed earlier in the summer, but that deal has reportedly stalled, with expectations that Atleti will pursue Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta instead. Currently on holiday, Robertson has just one year left on his contract and is contemplating his future while awaiting new interest.
On the other hand, Tsimikas is in a waiting position. While he desires more playing time next season, he is reluctant to leave Liverpool, a club he deeply values. Ornstein notes, “He’s eager for more playtime but would find it difficult to leave unless a compelling offer comes in.”
With Tsimikas publicly expressing his love for the club and a desire to compete for his position, the decision on Liverpool’s left-back could significantly influence their remaining summer activities, whether Tsimikas stays as a backup to Kerkez or Robertson vies for a starting role.
