Liverpool has issued an official statement confirming the tragic deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother in a car accident.
On Thursday morning, reports emerged that the Liverpool forward and his brother were involved in a fatal crash in Spain’s Zamora province at 1:30 a.m.
Just weeks prior to the accident, the 28-year-old had married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children, in a ceremony in Porto.
In response to the news, Liverpool released a statement saying, “The club has been informed that the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC will not make further comments at this time and requests privacy for Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff as they cope with this unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, making 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals, and winning the Premier League title, FA Cup, and League Cup. He became a fan favorite, with a beloved song sung by supporters at Anfield.
FC Porto, Jota’s former club, also expressed their condolences, stating: “FC Porto is in mourning. It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who was also part of our youth ranks. Rest in peace.”
Manchester United, a Premier League rival, also offered their condolences, saying, “Our deepest condolences are with the loved ones of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre, and everyone connected with Liverpool FC following today’s heartbreaking news.”
Local rivals Everton changed their social media profile to black and white and echoed these sentiments, stating: “Everyone at Everton is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. Our thoughts are with their family and friends during this sad time.”
