Diogo Jota released a statement following the tragic death of a Liverpool forward in a car accident, as reported by Spanish police.
Spanish police have confirmed details regarding the tragic death of Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota. The heartbreaking news emerged this morning that the 28-year-old forward died in a car accident while traveling with his brother, Andre Silva, in the Zamora region of Sanabria.
Firefighters responded to the scene on the A52, known as Palacios de Sanabria, after the vehicle caught fire. Emergency services were alerted just before 1 a.m. on Thursday, as the car was en route to nearby Benavente.
BBC News has spoken with the Guardia Civil, who confirmed the fatalities of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva.
According to the police, reported by the BBC: “So far, we know that the car, a Lamborghini, was involved in a traffic accident after a tire blowout while overtaking. This occurred around 00:30 BST in the municipality of Cernadilla in Zamora province. The vehicle caught fire, resulting in the deaths of both occupants.”
Tributes have been pouring in following the shocking news of his death. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher expressed his devastation on Instagram, stating: “Absolutely devastated by the sad news about Diogo Jota. Thoughts are with his wife Rute and their three kids.”
Ex-Manchester United defender Gary Neville remarked: “That is heartbreaking news about Diogo Jota and his brother. All my love and best wishes to his family.”
FC Porto, where Jota spent a loan year between 2016 and 2017, also issued a statement: “FC Porto is in mourning. We are deeply saddened and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also part of our youth ranks.”
