Arne Slot issues emotional tribute after Diogo Jota’s tragic passing
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has shared an emotional message following the tragic death of Diogo Jota.
The 28-year-old forward and his younger brother, Andre Silva, were killed in a car accident in northwestern Spain during the early hours of Thursday, July 3. According to BBC Sport, the Guardia Civil confirmed the incident, and reports from the Zamora Provincial Council stated that their vehicle caught fire, which then spread to nearby vegetation. The Council noted: “Two young individuals lost their lives in an accident on the A-52 near Palacios de Sanabria. The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station responded to the emergency. The car caught fire, and flames spread to the surrounding area. They were aged 28 and 26. May they rest in peace.”
Jota’s untimely passing occurred just ten days after he married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso.
Tributes flooded in from his former clubs – Porto, Wolves, Atletico Madrid, and Pacos de Ferreira – as well as from Liverpool. Prominent figures such as former captain Jamie Carragher, ex-manager Jurgen Klopp, and Portugal teammate Cristiano Ronaldo also paid heartfelt tributes.
Later in the day, at around 6:10 pm, Liverpool issued a statement on behalf of Arne Slot. The manager expressed his devastation:
“What can be said at a time like this when the pain and shock are so overwhelming? I don’t have the right words – only emotions that I know are shared by many who cared deeply about Diogo and his family.
My immediate thoughts are not from the perspective of a football manager, but as a human being – a father, a brother, a son. My heart goes out to the family of Diogo and Andre Silva, who are enduring an unimaginable loss.
My message to them is simple – you’ll never walk alone. Everyone at Liverpool – the players, the staff, and the fans – stands with you. And from what I’ve witnessed today, the global football community does too.”
