On Thursday, it was announced that Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, had died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, early that morning. They were returning to Liverpool ahead of the club’s preseason, set to start on Monday, when their vehicle experienced a tyre blowout while overtaking.

Emergency services arrived, but unfortunately, both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene. Jota’s passing has left the football community in shock, with tributes from figures like Cristiano Ronaldo, former manager Jurgen Klopp, and close friend Andrew Robertson.

Now, the 28-year-old’s physiotherapist, Miguel Goncalves, has recounted their conversation just hours before the accident. Goncalves had been working with Jota as he recovered from a pneumothorax, or collapsed lung. Jota had been managing pain from the condition while awaiting surgery after Portugal’s Nations League victory over Spain earlier this month.

Goncalves mentioned that he said goodbye to Jota and Andre around 8:30 p.m. He noted that Andre was accompanying Jota on the trip to spend time together. Jota informed him that the journey would take about eight hours, with a planned stop at a hotel in Burgos for rest. They were expected to reach Santander, take a boat, and then head to England, with their family arriving later by plane.

The physiotherapist praised Jota’s professionalism and addressed misleading media reports suggesting the brothers had been partying before the crash. Goncalves clarified that they were not in a celebratory mood and emphasized Jota’s dedication to his recovery.

He described Jota’s remarkable progress, stating that when he left him, Jota was pain-free and eager to return to Liverpool. Excited about the upcoming season, Jota planned to skip the preseason tour to Japan to focus on his recovery, believing he would have a great season ahead.
