Deal nearly done: Fabrizio Romano shares morning update as ‘breathtaking’ Liverpool star edges closer to departure
With Tyler Morton’s move to Lyon confirmed on Tuesday evening, another Liverpool departure may be on the horizon, according to new reports. The Reds are preparing for the new season with a refreshed attacking lineup, and more transfer activity—both in and out—could still take place before the window closes.
One player strongly tipped to leave is Darwin Nunez, who has reportedly attracted interest from Al-Hilal and AC Milan. It now looks increasingly likely that the Uruguayan may not be a Liverpool player come 1 September.
Nunez edging closer to Anfield exit
As per TEAMtalk, the 26-year-old is open to leaving and has given his approval to a possible switch to Al-Hilal. He’s said to be drawn by their ambitious long-term vision, including the recent appointment of Simone Inzaghi as head coach. Discussions between the Saudi club and Nunez’s representatives began back in April and have ramped up recently, with a verbal agreement now reportedly in place. The next step is for Liverpool and Al-Hilal to agree on a transfer fee.
Liverpool are aiming to recover much of the £65m they paid Benfica for Nunez three years ago, and formal negotiations are expected to begin shortly.
Fabrizio Romano also provided an update on Wednesday, claiming Al-Hilal are ‘close’ to sealing the deal, with the final call resting with the player himself.
Nunez showed flashes but never fully settled
Although Nunez previously seemed keen to stay in Europe, he now appears open to joining the growing number of players heading to the Saudi Pro League.
Despite a promising pre-season—netting five goals, just two fewer than in the entire 2024/25 campaign—it seems the striker is ready to bring his time at Anfield to a close. His Liverpool tenure has been marked by both brilliant flashes (as praised by Luis Suarez) and frustrating inconsistency.
With only one league start since January, the arrival of Hugo Ekitike, and strong interest in Alexander Isak, Nunez’s place in Arne Slot’s plans looks increasingly uncertain. Even his recent goal-scoring form doesn’t seem enough to change that.
While it’s disappointing that things never fully clicked for Nunez at Liverpool—despite some memorable moments—the club looks set to receive a significant fee, potentially helping fund a marquee signing like Isak.
If his last competitive appearance in red has already come, then we can only wish him success in his next chapter, which now seems more likely to be in Saudi Arabia than Europe.
