Arsenal have lined up an alternative to Eberechi Eze, but have been warned it would be the wrong signing.
Arsenal have been active in the transfer market and could still make more moves, with Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze among the names linked to the club.
Ademola Lookman has emerged as a possible target for Arsenal this month as he looks to engineer a move away from Atalanta, but former Gunners player Jermaine Pennant insists the club should instead focus on landing Eberechi Eze.
Lookman, who has been mentioned as a backup option to Crystal Palace star Eze, could suit Arsenal’s search for a wide player following Ethan Nwaneri’s contract extension. The 27-year-old is said to be frustrated with Atalanta for refusing to sanction his departure despite a prior agreement, leading him to submit a transfer request.
Pennant, however, doubts that Lookman would be a transformative addition. While he rates the winger’s performances in Serie A, he questioned whether he could consistently deliver in the Premier League or outperform Leandro Trossard. In his view, signing Lookman would boost depth but not significantly improve Arsenal’s title chances.
Instead, Pennant believes Eze should be the priority. He claims the Palace midfielder’s creativity, dribbling, vision, and goal threat would take pressure off Martin Ødegaard and add another dimension to the Gunners’ attack.
Given today’s inflated transfer fees, Pennant considers Eze’s £68m price tag reasonable and urged Arsenal to spend big if they want to compete at the highest level.
