Journalist claims Liverpool’s stance on Federico Chiesa may depend on the outcome of a former Everton flop’s situation.
Federico Chiesa has been linked with a Liverpool exit for much of the summer, yet with just 20 days remaining in the transfer window, he is still at Anfield.
The 27-year-old has drawn significant interest from clubs in Italy after making only 14 appearances under Arne Slot last season. His omission from the pitch in Sunday’s Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace — where he remained an unused substitute — further underlines his uncertain role.
While reports differ on whether a loan or permanent departure is more likely, the latter could depend on another transfer falling into place first.
Liverpool unlikely to sanction a sale — unless Atalanta move first
In his latest Substack column, David Lynch noted that a return to Italy has long been seen as the most probable outcome for Chiesa after his underwhelming debut campaign at Liverpool. However, the closer the deadline gets, the less likely a permanent deal seems.
Atalanta are among the clubs showing interest, but their ability to buy Chiesa outright may hinge on selling Ademola Lookman. If the former Everton winger — who scored just four goals in 48 appearances for the Toffees — is sold, likely for around €50m (£43.2m), the Serie A side could have the funds to make a move. Without that, a late loan switch may be Chiesa’s only option, as Slot reportedly has no plans for him this season.
A fresh start could be on the horizon
Chiesa’s continued absence from the pitch, even during subdued performances from Liverpool’s attack, suggests Slot does not see him as part of his immediate plans — a disappointment given his ability and popularity among fans.
Although many Kopites would prefer he stayed, a loan might be the best solution if game-time will be scarce. If he can remain fit and secure a regular role elsewhere, it could reignite his career after difficult spells at both Juventus and Liverpool.
For now, his future may rest on whether Atalanta can cash in on Lookman — a move that could open the door for Chiesa to finally secure the fresh start he likely needs.
