Liverpool has had an impressive summer transfer window, and Richard Hughes may deliver what many fans have been hoping for to cap it off.

Despite several new signings since the last season, the Reds currently have only three senior centre-backs, with Joe Gomez sidelined due to injury. However, this shortage may soon be resolved.

According to Paul Joyce, Liverpool has begun discussions with Crystal Palace for a potential move for Marc Guehi. The same article in The Times also noted that the club is interested in Parma’s teenage defender Giovanni Leoni.

Liverpool is pursuing both Guehi and Leoni
Florian Plettenberg from Sky Germany confirmed that Liverpool aims to sign both centre-backs this month, not just one.

On X, Plettenberg stated: “I’ve been informed again that Liverpool’s main target is Marc Guehi. Negotiations with Crystal Palace are ongoing, as the 25-year-old wants to join LFC. Additionally, super-talented 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni could also arrive this transfer window, with advanced talks underway. Both deals are on.”

The club’s efforts to secure both defenders show a commitment to enhancing centre-back depth while also acquiring a potential future star to eventually succeed the great Virgil van Dijk.

Joyce mentioned a possible fee of £35 million, including add-ons, for Guehi, which would be a bargain for a 25-year-old England international entering his peak years and a proven performer in the Premier League.

Leoni is just starting his career, with only 33 senior appearances, but a scouting report has praised him as a “very composed and physically dominant” centre-back, noted for his anticipation, ball-playing skills, and composure under pressure in Serie A.

While Guehi seems open to a move to Liverpool, persuading the Italian teenager could be more challenging. He might need to wait for opportunities under Arne Slot unless a deal allows him to join Liverpool while remaining on loan at Parma for the season.

Acquiring both centre-backs and potentially loaning one immediately would alleviate concerns about squad depth in that position and would highlight the excellent work of Hughes and the recruitment team at Anfield.
