Marc Guehi avoided adding fuel to the fire in his first remarks since his dramatic deadline-day move to Liverpool collapsed.

Speaking after England’s 5-0 victory over Serbia, Gary Neville applauded the Crystal Palace skipper for the composed way he addressed the topic.

“I thought it was brilliant,” Neville said on The Overlap. “The way he dealt with the question about Liverpool was pure class — smiling, relaxed, not defensive. He called it an ‘interesting two weeks’ without being provocative or trying to be clever. You can just tell he’s a genuinely good person.

“People said 10 days ago that it’s better to be Alexander Isak, who got his transfer, than Marc Guehi, who didn’t. But over the course of your life, being the kind of person Guehi showed himself to be will serve you far better.”
