‘Clueless About It All’—Son Heung-min Opens Up on Fresh Fantasy Game With His LAFC Teammates

Throughout his decorated career at Tottenham Hotspur and now with LAFC, Son Heung-min has been a regular feature in countless fantasy football teams.

Since moving to LAFC and spending five consecutive weeks in the United States with both his club and the South Korean national team, he has been introduced to a different type of fantasy competition—the LAFC fantasy American football league.

“I’m in the fantasy team, so we are competing. I still have no idea what’s going on, but I’m following along with it. I think it’s great to socialize with the teammates, and it’s a really good idea,” Son said ahead of LAFC’s clash with the San Jose Earthquakes at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, where over 54,000 fans were in attendance. “I’ve enjoyed every single moment.”

Veteran LAFC players Aaron Long and Ryan Hollingshead were the ones who introduced Son to the league, helping him settle into the Black and Gold and adapt to American culture. However, they also tried to take advantage of his lack of knowledge of American football. “Aaron and Ryan sent us some bad trades,” Son admitted with a smile. “They tried something bad, but I was strong. I stopped with my team.”

Son’s connection to American football isn’t entirely new. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, opened in 2019, has regularly hosted NFL games, and his trademark frame celebration was once copied by Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley during his time with the New York Giants.

Minutes after speaking about the fantasy league, Son made headlines on the pitch by scoring in the second minute of play, the third-fastest goal in LAFC’s history, sparking a 4–2 victory over the Earthquakes.

Since his arrival in Los Angeles, the 31-year-old has quickly made an impact, finding the net in Dallas, Chicago, and San Francisco for LAFC, while also scoring for South Korea in New Jersey and Nashville.

“Sonny is very, very consistent, whether it’s playing for the national team or his club team,” LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo said after the game. “What I’m most impressed with is how Sonny treats people.”
